Steps to Becoming a Singer

Young Teen Female Singer on Stage Performing

Have you spent your entire life dreaming of becoming a singer? I know it’s been mine for a while. Being center stage, hitting the perfect note, and having the audience erupt in applause after a performance.

When I first started writing books at the age of 8, I could not have imagined I would also become an actress, songwriter and artist. Singing is my passion and I have dreamed of becoming a successful singer for as long as I can remember. But it has not always been easy, especially as a teenager, and I’m still in the early stages of my career.

If you share in my dream, know it’s closer to reality than you think with some basic steps to becoming a singer!

Journey to Becoming a Singer

When you become serious about starting the journey to becoming a singer you should sit down and talk and think through the reasons why you want to start a singing career. It is not as glamorous as it looks and all artists and musicians have spent countless hours practicing and auditioning. I spend a lot of time practicing and writing lyrics too. Not to mention performing and networking as I wait for the same “big break” older performers have experienced.

To eventually make it big, you will need to remember your reasoning for wanting to become successful in the first place. When you are having a hard day or week, it is important to take a step back and reflect on the importance of why you wanted to be a singer. Write this in the cover of your song journal or somewhere where you’ll see it often and it will push you through auditions and performances. This should be your motivation and driving factor to get on stage again and again!

How to Kick-Start Your Way to Becoming A Singer

Let me share with you some tips I used, and continue to use and reflect on, as I aspire to become more recognized as a singer. No matter your age, it is never too early or late to live out your dreams!

Have the right mindset.

You should remember being a successful singer takes hard work, effort, determination, and persistence. Do not expect to be an overnight success; it may take you years or decades to be in the “right place at the right time.”

Learn how to read music.

This one may seem obvious, but there are a lot of aspiring musicians, especially singers, who do not know how to read music and read it well. I have taken my musical knowledge one step further, and I write my own songs as well as sing.

Perfect practice makes practice perfect.

You should be prepared to practice all the time! Hiring a voice coach and taking singing lessons will significantly strengthen your voice and improve your vocal range. If you cannot afford a face-to-face option, consider looking for an online singing course. Having consistent feedback and goals to work towards will only benefit your voice.

Get involved.

No matter your age it is important to get yourself out there and practice being on stage. There’s nothing worse than stage fright! Create or join a local band or audition for the school or community center musical. These experiences will provide excellent feedback as well as giving you confidence and getting you out of your comfort zone.

Establish a strong online presence.

We live in a wonderful age of social media and we should use it to your advantage. Establish a YouTube Channel and upload all your music videos. Establish Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts that can play your songs as well. Become an influencer.

Sometimes all it takes is the right person at the right time watching your video. A talent manager discovered Justin Bieber at the age of 13 after he had watched videos of Bieber singing on YouTube.

Never Give Up

One of the most important pieces of advice that I carry with me today and want to let others know about is to NEVER GIVE UP! Every singer has had his or her fair share of ups and downs. It may seem easy to quit when things get too hard or take up too much time or start to become too demanding.

Not everyone you meet may love your musical style, but that is okay. Not everyone loves country music and not everyone loves rap or rock. The important thing is you keep trying and eventually you may find the right audience for your voice and style!

Fuel Your Passion for Singing

While there is no guarantee to anyone that they will end up a famous singer, following these basic steps it will help propel you in the right direction! Remember why you wanted to become a singer in the first place—it was your passion and something you loved and cannot live without.

I am very thankful that at such a young age I was able to recently release a new single titled Taste It featuring Indian Trap. You can listen to my video through my website or on Spotify, Amazon, TikTok, or Apple Music.
